Passings

Dr. Earnest Shearer

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Earnest Shearer, DO on March 7, 2004 at the age of 86. Dr. Shearer was the founder and Chief of Staff at the Beechwold Clinic, 4191 North High Street, in Columbus, Ohio and continued to see patients during his 86th year. The Beechwold Natural Clinic has been in existence for approximately 45 years and is considered the oldest continually running natural clinic in the United States.

Patients traveled from both East and West coasts to be treated by Dr. Shearer through his holistic methods and his unique approach to the patient as a whole. Dr. Shearer lectured widely and founded the first organic gardening group in Ohio, New York, and Michigan. The Beechwold Natural Foods store, which he began 45 years ago, was the first store in Ohio to carry yogurt.

Three years ago at the age of 83, Dr Shearer was asked to appear in Washington, D.C., to be acknowledged as a Pioneer in Holistic Medicine. Dr. Shearer was not only a dedicated, gifted holistic physician, lecturer, and leader in the profession, but a kind and gentle man loyal to his patients and friends. Dr. Shearer was a man who lived his life from his heart.
